Answer God’s Call To Change The World
Through Mission Service!!
For 2018 the Mission Trip will be to Jaco, Costa Rica July 7 – July 16, 2018. 25 spots are open for students from 8th to 12th grade. Costa Rica’s population lives in poverty. There seems to be a growing disparity between the incomes of the less educated, rural portions of the population and the more educated, urban population, concentrated in the San Jose metro area including Jaco which is 2 hours away from the capital. According to data from the 2016 census, some 19 percent of urban households lived in poverty and another 5.2 percent in extreme poverty. But in rural areas, those numbers increase to 30.3 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively. The unemployment rate of the poorest 20 percent of households increased by 29 percent between 2012 and 2016. When we see the education system, according with the statistics from 2014, 56 percent of the country’s workforce had not graduated high school, and 71 percent had never received any form of additional education past high school. So with that in mind, we have connected with Oceans Edge Missions and the Horizon Church to be partners with them to do our next International Mission Trip.
They are overwhelmed with a backlog of requests for home & school repairs; they have turned to us to join their ongoing effort to provide safe, decent, and healthy homes and classrooms for the people and specially for the children at school. Perhaps Youth Ministry will work with all the children in the community doing a VBS program and also join the Kids Club with a Dental Clinic for the kids.
Just as important will be our opportunity to build relationships, touching hearts as well as homes. The residents we serve will be encouraged to share their traditions with us. Special opportunities for one-on-one cultural exchange are being planned. Youth will explore and appreciate the vibrant culture as well as the deep pride of the Costa Rica people.
