There are cultural conventions and expectations that come to us from our families, our friends, our work associates, the whole machinery of marketing. Even our religious upbringing. We are part of a web of expectations that inform us, shape us, threaten to exclude and shame us if we step off of the path of conformity.
This is where we realize that what we most want is actually beyond our control. Rather than moving heaven and earth in an attempt to make things come our precisely as we desire, we befriend God and seek him as our satisfaction. When it comes to the adventures of life and what we will leave behind, we partner with God and seek the guidance and presence of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is crystal clear that if we are seeking love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control we will come up empty. But if we are partners with God, if we welcome the presence of the presence of the Holy Spirit, then we be filled with what we desire. We will have the wisdom, compassion, love, grace, truth, and all the rest of God's guidance and strength already on board.
