Haggai's four brief sermons are a wake-up call to a spiritually slumbering community. He called the people to authentic worship, trust in God's word, personal holiness, and obedience to God's leader, Jesus.
Today's mainline Protestant churches are facing a similar decline in spirituality; it's time for less apathy and more renewal. The poignant question for First United Methodist Church, despite whatever the future of our denomination or the larger set of mainline churches...the poignant and pressing question for us here this morning is whether we intend to actually partner with God in the Jesus Mission or not. The Pastor does not renew a church. A marketing approach or slick program does not renew a church. The Spirit of God among the people of God who are seeking to be partners with God -- that is the most important thing.
