News From The Conference
  • On January 1, 2021, the Northern Illinois Conference welcomed retired Bishop John Hopkins to be our one-year interim bishop following the retirement of Bishop Sally Dyck. You can read more about Bishop Hopkins here:  https://www.umcnic.org/bishop
  • The Northern Illinois Conference voted to reduce the number of districts (and thus then number of district superintendents) from 6 to 5 beginning this July 2021. Our new district is named the Prairie Central District and our new district superintendent will be Rev. Jeffry Bross who is currently the Aurora District superintendent. You can read more about the redistricting here: https://www.umcnic.org/news/redistricting-announcement
  • Our current district superintendent, Rev. Darneather Murph-Heath, who served First Church as associate pastor will be retiring effective July 1, 2021. Watch future announcements for some retirement celebration news.
  • The General Conference which is slated to discuss legislation around a church split due to theological differences around homosexuality was rescheduled from last May to this coming August/September. This has now been rescheduled once again to next year, August/September of 2022. These extensions are due to the COVID pandemic which still prevents extra-large and international gatherings from taking place safely. As well, there are a multitude of complications in trying to conduct an international virtual conference. You can read more about that here: https://www.umnews.org/en/news/general-conference-postponed-until-2022
