Past Performance and Future Returns

Past Performance and Future Returns

Today we bring our attention to a portion of Scripture that many find deeply unsettling. Jesus is addressing our penchant to accumulate more and more stuff along with our desire to accumulate more and more money. The Gospel of Matthew, chapters 5-7, often referred to as The Sermon on the Mount, tells us, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”   Matthew 6:19-24 NLT

Our money and our stuff can masquerade as a god; money is very powerful. We canoffer our devotion, our obedience and our service to money. But God will not share our devotion. One must serve the other. Either our attachment to God will be shaped by our devotion to money or our attachment to money will be shaped by our devotion to the True and Living God.
