The First Miracle

The First Miracle

This is the season of Epiphany in the Christian church. Many stories are told that reveal who Jesus is; one of those stories is about Jesus turning water into wine. The transformation of water into wine at the Wedding at Cana is the first miracle attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of John. In the Gospel account, Jesus, his mother and his disciples are invited to a wedding, and when the wine runs out, Jesus delivers a sign of his glory by turning water into wine. The account of this story is in
John 2: 1-11.

There is so much to reflect on in these verses; Jesus is at a wedding; why use stone jars, ritual washing; symbolism of abundant grace….God is present in the midst.

This first of many miracles Jesus would perform came right after Jesus called the disciples to follow him; this miracle helped them to step forward in their faith. He called the disciples to begin to do the work he asked of them.

We also, as a congregation, are co-workers of Jesus by our faithfulness and witness; we need to be like the disciples and trust and believe in Jesus’ glories.
