What Does Jesus Say About Divorce?
As we continue to study the Book of Mark in the Declutter series, we come to Mark 10:1-4 when Jesus was in the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Some Pharisees tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” What did Moses command you?” he replied. They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”
God created man and woman in his own image; men and women together hold the image of God; not separately. But some Israelites had ‘hardened their hearts’ against God’s original intent and had become adulterous. Jesus contrasts these two realities: human hardness of heart and God’s original intention. The disconnect between these two provides the reason for the “certificate of divorce”.
The point is that Christian marriage is a matter of discipleship. It does not stand outside our obedience to Christ; indeed, it is to be an evidence of our obedience to Christ. It is one concrete way we can put the kingdom of God first in our lives.
